What if I can’t see mold, but it smells?
If you can smell mold, it is actively reproducing and it’s time to get a professional on the project. Often times paint and other materials will mask the presence of mold, this is when sampling becomes necessary. Sampling can also determine the type of mold that is present. In short, if you notice a musty odor, then you most likely have mold. Mold requires moisture to grow, so the first step in fixing or cleaning up mold is to eliminate the moisture problem.
Can I get a home mold test kit?
What the home mold test kits don’t tell you is that every home has small amounts of mold. If you use the petri dish in the mold test it will not give you any useful information. If you smell mold, they will not tell you what caused the problem or how to locate the mold. You need a visual inspection by a trained professional. Even Consumer Reports rated 4 different home mold testing kits as “Not Recommended”.
Do I need mold testing if I can see it?
You should always start with an visual inspection along with a dry check to make sure you don’t an existing moisture problem. If mold is discovered, you won’t require testing to prove you have mold, but you need testing to confirm where the mold has spread, and what it has affected so a detailed scope of work can be written that includes not only all the damage to the building, but also the contents.

Can I use bleach to clean up mold?
Bleach won’t kill mold, it can only make it unable to reproduce. It leaves behind all the toxic components behind that can be inhaled and affect your health. Never use bleach on wood, carpet, drywall, etc., in an attempt to kill mold, you can cause additional damage.
